Western United fans will be treated to a Melbourne derby frenzy this A-League season, with Western United securing AAMI Park as a home game venue.
Three of the four games secured will be against cross-town rivals Melbourne Victory and Melbourne City – a mouth-watering offering for fans at one of the state’s best football stadiums.
Western United and Football Australia initially released the 2020/2021 season fixture with some ‘to be confirmed’ venues for home games. The updated fixture now includes four home games at AAMI Park and one additional home game at GMHBA Stadium in Geelong.
The additional dates and venues are as below:
- Matchweek 8 – vs Melbourne City on 13 February 2021 at AAMI Park, Melbourne
- Matchweek 9 – vs Melbourne Victory on 20 February 2021 at AAMI Park, Melbourne
- Matchweek 10 – vs Sydney FC on 26 February 2021 at AAMI Park, Melbourne
- Matchweek 18 – vs Central Coast Mariners (date to be confirmed) at GMHBA Stadium, Geelong
- Matchweek 19 – vs Melbourne Victory on 2 May 2021 at AAMI Park, Melbourne
“While we continue to work hard on our stadium build project in Wyndham City Council, we have been looking for opportunities to play home games at Covid-19 safe venues both within Victoria and further afield,” said Western United CEO Chris Pehlivanis.
“To be able to play home games at AAMI Park is a great result for our fans. We want as many fans from the west to be able to access our brand of football as possible, and with games now scheduled in Melbourne, Geelong and Ballarat, we think we have all bases covered.”
The club continues to work towards securing a venue for the final two unconfirmed home games on the fixture, with the intention of taking the games across Bass Strait to Tasmania.
“While we are committed to our fanbase and geographical roots in Victoria’s west, we are currently exploring an opportunity to work with the Tasmanian State Government and Football Tasmania to not only showcase Western United’s brand of football but to bring A-League to the state.
“There is so much untapped football talent in Tasmania and with our growing development program at Western United, this could be an exciting opportunity to not only grow the game of football at a grass roots level in Tasmania, but to one day have Tasmanian girls and boys playing for the green and black,” Pehlivanis concluded.
The club will also play two games in Ballarat at MARS Stadium, which solidifies the commitment to the region.
The announcement is a welcome one on the eve of the 2020/2021 season kick-off and coinciding with Matchweek 1 tickets going on sale.
The team play Adelaide United in the club’s first home game of the season at GMHBA Stadium in Geelong on December 28.
