Young Matildas attacker Kahli Johnson has become Western United’s third Liberty A-League Women signing on the eve of the 2022 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup.
Johnson will join her Young Matildas teammates on the pitch tomorrow as they go up against host nation Costa Rica in the opening match of the World Cup Group Stage.
Upon confirming her move to the West, Johnson said she is delighted to be part of history in the Green and Black.
“I’m really excited by this opportunity to join the first ever women’s team at Western United,” she said.
“It’s been a big past year for me and I’m confident that Western United will help continue my development on and off the pitch.
“I can’t wait to get started, and to hopefully create something special at the Club,” Johnson said.
Johnson was a player Head Coach Mark Torcaso identified early as one he wanted to add to the squad.
“There’s a reason why Kahli has been representing the national teams for so many years now, I’m delighted to be able to bring her in,” he said.
“She already has big qualities, but it’s the size of her potential and her maturity and mentality at such a young age that makes this signing extra special.
“I’m sure Kahli will achieve big things in Green and Black and I feel really honoured that we’ll be able to help shape some of that potential here in the West.”
Johnson has represented Australia at youth level in each calendar year since 2018, initially lining up for the Junior Matildas in AFC Qualifiers.
In 2020 she was selected into the Under 18’s Young Matildas camp at just 16 years of age before progressing to the Under 19’s in the following year.
Johnson earned her senior breakthrough with three appearances for Sydney FC in the A-League Women last season, and will now look to make her mark on the world stage in Costa Rica before joining the Green and Black.
