A-League Stalwart Andrew Durante joins Western United Football Club
Western United Football Club (WUFC) has today announced it has signed one of the most respected footballers in the history of the Hyundai A-League, legend Andrew Durante, in its inaugural season.
On his recruitment to the Club, Durante said that he is looking forward to joining the team as a leader both on and off the pitch.
“Joining a brand-new club is an exciting challenge for me. I’m looking forward to stepping out of my comfort zone and into a new environment where I believe I can add significant value.
“First and foremost, I’m keen to get out on the pitch and getting started with the team. The playing squad is looking really strong already. Given my experience, if the Club sees value in having me assist the Football Department, then I’d be proud to help in any way I can.
“Already, the Club’s vision to be successful has appealed to me, and ultimately, I couldn’t pass up an opportunity to move closer to my family,” Durante said.
WUFC Football Director, Steve Horvat, said the opportunity was very positive, for both Durante and the Club.
“It is fantastic that despite being new, we’re able to catch the attention of great people within the industry. Attracting infuential and talented individuals like Mark Rudan, John Anastasiadis, John Hutchinson, Frank Juric and now Andrew Durante, in the twilight of his career, is a significant testament of the potential of Western United.
“Andrew will be a great asset across all facets of our Club from playing and mentoring younger players, helping our football administration plan for expansion, and interacting with our community,” Horvat said.
Durante (b. 3 May 1982) completed his long stint as captain of Wellington Phoenix at the end of the 2018/19 Hyundai A-League season. With a long list of domestic football achievements, Durante started his Hyundai A-League career with the Newcastle Jets, where he won the 2007/08 Hyundai A-League Grand Final, earning the Joe Marston Medal for best player a eld.
In 2008, Durante joined Wellington Phoenix and was named Club Captain. Upon his departure, he had notched up a record 273 appearances and holds the record for the most games played for the club.
Andrew Durante will join WUFC in late June after taking time to spend with family.
WUFC will join the Hyundai A-League from the start of the 2019/20 season beginning in October this year.
