Six footballers will forever live in the Western United history books, departing the Club after taking part in the Green and Black’s first ever Liberty A-League Women season.
Sydney Cummings departs having been a constant for Mark Torcaso’s side, playing every minute of every match at centre-back and earning a Player of the Month nomination in December.
Cummings scored four goals for United, including an ice-cold winning penalty against Melbourne City in February.
Francesca Iermano was a starter in Western United’s historic opening match against Melbourne Victory, going on to make nine appearances in total.
Iermano’s energy helped the Club go all the way to the Grand Final in its first ever season and she will move on with memories made in Green and Black.
Danielle Steer joined Western United halfway through the season and will depart after scoring two goals and providing two assists in 14 appearances.
The attacker’s best performance came against Canberra United where she scored her first ever professional goal and added an assist in a 5-0 win.
Great excitement and admiration accompanied Aleksandra Sinclair’s signing ahead of the Club’s inaugural campaign, with the Victorian football icon moving into the professional game for the first time.
Sinclair played eight times for Torcaso’s side and formed part of the inaugural leadership group, leaving her mark on the group before departing at the conclusion of her contract.
Tiana Jaber was the last addition to United’s squad, arriving in the West as an injury replacement signing heading into the final weeks of the campaign.
After playing twice in the regular season, Jaber departs with a runners-up medal after playing the final 10 minutes of the Grand Final off the bench.
It was a difficult season for Harriet Withers but while she was unable to step foot onto the pitch, she remained an important member of the squad.
A much-loved figure in the team, Withers worked tirelessly to overcome an ankle injury but setbacks cruelly robbed her of the chance to represent Western United.
Western United General Manager of Football Mal Impiombato thanked each player for their historic contributions to the football club.
“Each of these six players have played crucial parts in building our history as a football club and will each be fondly remembered in the West,” he said.
“We would like to thank each of them for their significant contributions over the course of our first season in the Liberty A-League and wish them all the best with their next steps.”
Western United is continuing to build its squad for the 2023/24 Liberty A-League season with pre-season commencing in September.
