Berisha aiming high at Western United

The A-League’s all-time top goalscorer Besart Berisha is poised to make his Hyundai A-League return this weekend with Western United.

The former Brisbane Roar and Melbourne Victory striker signed for Western United late last month amidst a fan frenzy.

And he is poised to wear Green and Black for the first time in the club’s opening round clash with Wellington Phoenix this Sunday.

The former Victory and Roar hero came off the bench in United’s 1-1 draw in a pre-season friendly against Western Sydney Wanderers last Saturday.

Berisha scored 106 goals in 186 appearances for Brisbane and Victory, before making a move to Japan with Sanfrecce Hiroshima.

Berisha with fans

“It’s kind of exciting. As a player, you have the first chance in a club in its first season to create history, to bring supporters, to play for new fans,” he told Michael Lynch of The Age.

“The challenge is definitely not easy, it’s going to start from zero, but we take it as it comes and the boys have been working very hard.”

The squad certainly has been working hard at their Caroline Springs base ahead of their first season, with Berisha completing his first week in Green and Black.

“I decided to come here because I want to keep winning games and trophies, and this is why I chose Western United.

“The A-League means a lot to me. I joined the A-League after a difficult time in Europe and it was really the breakthrough for me, and A-League has done well for me.

“I’m very thankful for this country and the A-League, but this is why I chose to come back,” he told www.wufc.com.au

The four-time A-League championship winner loves to play in the big games, having scored in four A-League Grand Finals.

He also enjoyed a run of scoring in eight consecutive A-League finals between 2014 and 2017.

Post round 1, Berisha will turn his attention to the club’s first-ever home game against Perth Glory.
