Western United’s character helped them record a stunning win over Western Sydney Wanderers on Friday night, according to Head Coach Mark Rudan.
United gave up a 3-0 lead against the Wanderers with just 20 minutes to play, before late goals from Max Burgess and captain Alessandro Diamanti secured all three points.
“It showed great character at 3-3. It could have gone the other way,” Rudan told reporters during the post-game press conference.
“It was extremely important to get that next one [Burgess’ goal] and then obviously Diamanti’s class shone through for the next one.
“Full credit to our players for flicking that switch and continuing to play that attacking brand of football.
“They’ve shown a lot of will, togetherness and character and that’s what’s got us through in the end along with quality.”
Rudan praised captain Alessandro Diamanti, who notched a dazzling brace, taking his goal tally to seven this season.
“He’s just superb. 99 per cent of players would look to play that ball to the back post. But not Diamanti, and that’s the difference.
“It’s a joy to watch and a joy to coach. He ends up being the man of the match for mine.
“He’s a great captain, a great leader and an inspiration to the rest of us.”

Rudan also provided an update on defender Andrew Durante, who was substituted off in the second half with a hip injury.
“It was more precaution than anything else. It’s just a flare type of injury that will settle down in a couple days and he’ll be ready to go for the next game.”
United have a five-day turnaround before facing Perth Glory at Bankwest Stadium on Wednesday.
