Western United is delighted to welcome Helen Winterburn to the Club as the inaugural Liberty A-League Women Assistant Coach.
After beginning coaching in the United Kingdom at the age of 16, Winterburn went on to earn UEFA B Licence and take on a four-year scholarship at Limestone University in South Carolina, United States.
That brought her journey to Australia in 2019 and after stints at South Melbourne and NTC Under 17’s, Winterburn has been the head coach of the FV Emerging Matildas squad for the past two years in NPLW Victoria.
Winterburn said she was honoured to have the opportunity and was looking forward to working with Mark Torcaso in the Liberty A-League Women.
“I’m very excited. It’s a great time to come into a new Club, a new environment, and I’m looking forward to getting started for the first A-League Women season at Western United,” she said.
“The fact you come in as the first one, you get to set the scene, you get to create the environment, you get to be part of something that’s brand new and hasn’t been there previously.
“I keep saying exciting, but it is! I think for me, coaching wise it’s a new environment, a new challenge, which is important for me to challenge myself as a coach.”
Western United General Manager of Football Mal Impiombato said Helen’s appointment is another step in the right direction for United’s maiden A-League Women campaign.
“Helen arrives with a great deal of experience and know-how in Victorian football and she’ll be a great addition to our A-League Women side,” he said.
“This appointment is another big step for us in shaping the team ahead of the season, and our preparations will continue in the coming weeks and months as we look to create a competitive squad in the women’s space.”
Work is well underway to have Western United’s inaugural A-League Women squad ready to compete come the beginning of the 2022/23 season in October.
