Kat Smith will continue to grow Western United’s vision for women’s football in the west of Melbourne after signing on as Liberty A-League Women Head Coach for the 2024/25 season.

The head coach has found a home at Western United and in Tarneit, where she will lead her team into an historic Elimination Final against Newcastle Jets on Saturday night.

Ahead of that contest and with a commitment to next season locked in, Smith said she feels this is only the beginning for her squad.

“I am extremely pleased to commit to this Club for next season and continue the work that we have done as a collective to drive success in the West,” she said.

“This is a testament to the support of our coaching staff and the application of the players through their attitude and attributes that have led us into our home Elimination Final.

“It’s worth noting the amazing support that I’ve been fortunate enough to receive from my loved ones throughout this journey, and their unwavering commitment to standing by my side as we move forward.

“As we build towards the future, we are firm in our commitment to represent our community in Tarneit and we look forward to seeing them come out to support the girls on Saturday.”

Western United General Manager of Football Mal Impiombato said Smith’s commitment to all levels of club life made her the perfect leader for the Club’s future in the West.

“Kat has showed outstanding dedication, passion and understanding of our values and ambition since joining the Club,” he said.

“That has translated on the pitch with an exciting brand of football for our fans to enjoy, bringing the Club to our first consecutive finals appearances.

“Football fans in Tarneit have a team that will represent them wholeheartedly under Kat’s guidance and we are delighted to see her continue to develop this group of players for another season.”

Western United was sitting in eighth place when Smith took charge and quickly rose up the table while playing some stunning attacking football.

While looking ahead to next season, Smith’s full focus will be dedicated to Saturday’s final against the Jets at the Regional Football Facility.

The football family in Tarneit can get behind Smith and her team to help push them towards the semi-finals, with tickets on sale now.
