Lachie Wales will remain a Western United icon as he departs the Club in pursuit of an exciting opportunity overseas.
Wales amassed 107 appearances in Green and Black since joining in 2020, sitting second in the Club’s all-time appearances list and contributing to some of United’s greatest moments.
Of his 14 goals for the Club, one stands above the rest – a crisp strike into the roof of the net at AAMI Park which put United ahead in its semi-final tie against Melbourne Victory in 2022 – a lead which John Aloisi’s side would later add to before winning the Grand Final the following week.
Wales’ impact off the pitch has been of equal value in Western United’s short history with his position firmly cemented as a fan-favourite and an all-time Green and Black great.
Looking back on four incredible years in the West, Wales said he leaves with some of the greatest experiences of his career at the forefront of his mind.
“I’d just like to say thank you from the bottom of my heart. It takes a lot to build a football club and I’m really proud that I’ve been able to be here for so many years and build the culture and values,” he said.
“I’ve made so many great friendships and so many great memories, and I’m really looking forward to seeing where the Club can go. I’ll be watching from afar, I know the Club will be doing great things and I can’t wait to watch.”
Western United General Manager of Football Mal Impiombato said Wales’ impact right throughout the Club would be felt for a long time.
“Lachie has been an incredible member of our community for the past four years and while he will be dearly missed, we are delighted for him to secure an opportunity abroad,” he said.
“He has developed such a strong connection with our fanbase and been part of our biggest milestones on the pitch, playing a major role in building the foundations of our young Club.
“We are incredibly thankful for the contribution that Lachie has made to our Club and wish him every success in his next steps. He will have lasting legacy here at Ironbark Fields and will always be welcome back as a member of our family.”
Everyone associated with Western United thanks Lachie for his considerable contributions both on and off the pitch and wishes him the very best in the future.
