Western United received a huge boost to their upcoming A-League campaign after announcing the signing of international midfielder Víctor Sánchez.
United fans will see Sánchez in action for the next two seasons after he signed a multi-year deal with the Green and Black last week.
The Spaniard has played with and against some of the best players in the world and is hoping his experience can make a difference this coming A-League season.
Here are some of Sánchez’s biggest achievements in his decorated career:
Sánchez has made over 300 La Liga appearances
The Spaniard made his first appearance in Spain’s top flight in March 2008, coming on as a late sub for FC Barcelona in a 2-2 draw away to UD Almería. The Barca line-up that day also included the likes of Xavi, Andrés Iniesta, Samuel Eto’o and Carles Puyol. Two loan moves followed to Xerez and Getafe where he made 25 and 29 appearances respectively, before transferring to RCD Espanyol in 2012. He would go on to make 239 appearances for the Barcelona based club, eventually becoming captain, before departing at the end of the 2019/20 La Liga season.
A treble winner
In the 2008/09 season, Sánchez was part of one of the greatest teams of the modern era, playing under Pep Guardiola at Barcelona. The Blaugrana won it all that season – La Liga, Copa del Rey, and biggest of all, the UEFA Champions League. Sánchez made appearances in all three competitions that season, and subsequently picked up a winner’s medal for each at the age of 21.
He’s represented the Catalonia national team
Sánchez has represented Catalonia at the international level. The Catalonian national team does not play in official FIFA or UEFA competitions, but in friendly matches and the Catalonia International Trophy. Sánchez has made four appearances for Catalonia, and even lined up with former Western Sydney Wanderers striker Oriol Riera in a 4-1 friendly win over Cape Verde in 2013.
