Steven Lustica will remain one of Western United’s favourite sons with the midfielder set to depart the Club at the conclusion of his contract.

The 33-year-old became a Western United legend over 84 appearances – the sixth most in the Club’s history – and was an integral part of the Isuzu UTE A-League Men Championship-winning side in 2022.

That season, Lustica made 26 appearances and scored a joint career-high five goals including crucial winners against Melbourne City and Sydney FC.

The No.10 entered the Finals Series with an injury but returned in the nick of time, featuring in the semi-final second leg against Melbourne Victory and playing just over an hour in the Grand Final.

Lustica would go on to become a vice-captain for the 2023/24 season, remaining a pivotal leader at the Club until the end.

Reminiscing on his tenure of over four years at Western United, Lustica said the memories and support from the fans will stick with him forever.

“My time at Western United has been filled with memorable moments,” he said.

“Winning the Championship will be one of the proudest moments of my career. It’s a testament to the hard work and dedication of everyone involved, and I am grateful to have been a part of such an historic achievement.

“Thank you to the staff, coaches and my teammates – it has been a privilege to work alongside you.

“The unwavering support of the Western United fans has been truly inspiring and I am grateful to have experienced your incredible support first-hand.

“It has been an honour to wear the Club’s colours and represent you all on and off the field.”

Western United General Manager of Football Mal Impiombato hailed Lustica’s role in shaping some of the Club’s most successful moments.

“Steven has been the ultimate professional on and off the pitch since joining our Club and he has had a significant impact on shaping our journey to date,” he said.

“Our supporters have held Steven in the highest regard over the past five seasons, and he will always be remembered for his role in our Championship win and in building the culture and identity of our Club.

“On behalf of everyone associated with Western United, I would like to thank Steven for everything he has given to the Club. I wish him and his family the very best in the future, and they will always be welcome at Western United.”

Lustica’s quality on the field, his leadership and the respect he commanded off it will ensure his legacy as one of the Club’s greats lives on into the future.

Lustica joins fellow Club legend Josh Risdon in departing Western United with the Club celebrating the contributions of both men this week.

Everyone at Western United wishes Steven every success in his next steps and will look fondly towards the moments he helped to create.
