Western United approaches final VPL 1 home match with high stakes

Western United is approaching a critical final two weeks in the VPL 1 Men’s season and the team needs all the support of the Green and Black faithful in the last home fixture this Sunday.

Diogo Ferreira’s side is set to play host to FC Bulleen Lions at Ironbark Fields at 4pm as the promotion race reaches a thrilling climax in 2024.

With two matches remaining, United sits in third place on the table, just one point behind Preston Lions and six off Melbourne Victory, with the latter looming as United’s final day opponent.

Two wins from two go a long way to assisting in United’s promotion push, but the sole focus wll be on emulating the 3-0 win over Bulleen in May once the first ball is kicked on Sunday.

Western United’s Senior Academy side has been simply electric in the 2024 campaign, scoring 69 goals in 24 matches – nine more than any other team in Victoria’s top three divisions.

The Green and Black’s collection of thrilling young attackers has been on fire. Nicolas Koek leads the way on 11 goals, just in front of Abel Walatee and Luke Vickery on 10 while Jake Najdovski has contributed nine strikes in just 11 outings.

Being the last game of the weekend’s fixtures, the Green and Black will know before kick-off if a place in the top two will be up for grabs with a win.

United’s Academy stars have been generating a great deal of fanfare of late with 13 youth products making their professional debuts with Western United since the beginning of the 2023/24 season.

Many of those youngsters are now signed on and part of a thrilling, dynamic and high-octane Isuzu UTE A-League Men squad under John Aloisi, and the Western United faithful can get behind them now as they chase Club history in the Academy.

It’s set to be a huge day in Tarneit with all six Western United teams in action from early in the morning, adding to a cracking day of action in the West.
