Western United welcomed one and all to Ironbark Fields last weekend for a spectacular Celebrate Africa day alongside Africa Day Australia.
Thousands descended upon Tarneit’s new home for entertainment from early in the afternoon, right through all of the twists and turns in United’s Isuzu UTE A-League Men clash against Macarthur FC.
It all kicked off with the women’s African Cup of Nations Grand Final, seeing Uganda take on South Sudan in a pulsating contest.
Dominant throughout the tournament, Uganda came out on top with a 3-1 win to claim the title following a game full of action.
The men’s grand final followed suit and while Senegal did their utmost to knock South Sudan off their perch, their resistance was broken and South Sudan claimed a 4-1 victory to win the tournament for the third straight year.
The community came together after the matches for the presentation of the awards, food and drinks, market stalls and plenty more at Ironbark Fields.
All eyes then turned to the Isuzu UTE A-League clash where United did everything to win the game but just couldn’t find the back of the net.
It was a special day for Abel Walatee who started in a professional game for the first time and shone on the big stage in front of a number of friends and family.
Another richly successful day at Ironbark Fields, it was an afternoon that showed the power of community and the strength of uniting people through sport and entertainment.
On top of the Isuzu UTE A-League and Ninja A-League Women home matches, Western United is continually committed to making Ironbark Fields a hub for everyone in the community to call home and find connection, purpose and joy with each encounter.
Up next is a mammoth A-Leagues double header to round out the year with both teams taking on Brisbane Roar on Sunday 29 December.
Secure your tickets and come together as part of the Western family as grow with the community as one.
