The football community in Geelong wrapped up a special second edition of the Western United Cup in the region last weekend, hosted by Geelong Rangers Football Club.
After an incredible inaugural tournament in 2025, teams from Ballarat, Geelong and the West of Melbourne descended upon Geelong again this time around in another fantastic showing of community football. Age categories covered were U8, U9, U11, U12 and U13’s across the two-day tournament.
Since the first-ever event in Ballarat in 2022, the Western United Cup has grown into one of the premier events on the junior footballing calendar and continues to inspire kids across the state to take part.
With these tournaments in Ballarat (October) and Geelong (April) now firmly entrenched in the football calendar, the aim is to introduce a tournament in July which will be located at Western United’s home at Ironbark Fields in Tarneit. Details around that tournament will be released shortly.
Western United Director of Football Steve Horvat hailed the community impact of the Western United Cup as part of the club’s ongoing mission.
“There is nothing better than seeing young girls and boys being active and playing the sport they love in these tournaments. The smiles I witnessed on the players faces this past weekend in Geelong reminds me of why these events are so important,” he said.
“Our focus as a club is our community and our catchment area of the west of Melbourne, Ballarat and Geelong. Creating pathways and supporting the clubs in our region is important to us and we cannot wait to add a third Western United Cup in Tarneit in the middle of the year.”
