Western United will enter a dramatic final round of the VPL 1 Men season with so much at stake for both the Senior’s and the Under 23’s.
Taking on rivals Melbourne Victory to close the season, the Senior’s have a chance at promotion to NPL Victoria while the Under 23’s will be looking to clinch the Club’s first-ever Academy league title.
The action kicks off at 12:30pm at Hume City Stadium as Andreas Papanicolaou’s Under 23’s side aims to be crowned Premiers.
The 2024 season has reached an epic climax for the Under 23’s who shot to the top of the table just last week after an incredible 4-3 win against FC Bulleen Lions, leapfrogging their opponents into first place.
An incredible long-range strike from Tobias Servin on his Under 23’s debut secured the heart-stopping win and put the Green and Black on the cusp of the title.
There is still one final job to do, though. With just a one-point gap to Bulleen in second place, United will need to beat Melbourne Victory to all but ensure the title comes back to Ironbark Fields, with any dropped points potentially opening the door for Bulleen to regain top spot.
Western United Senior Academy side seeking promotion shot
Following that, the Senior’s will kick-off at 3pm with Diogo Ferreira and his side aiming to make history.
Melbourne Victory have already secured promotion as league champions, and Western United will be looking to join them in the top flight.
After a 2024 season that has gone back and forth all year, just one point separates United from Preston Lions and the final promotion place.
The Green and Black will be promoted with a win and any dropped points from Preston, while a draw could also be enough – in that case, Preston would have to lose away at Langwarrin and Northcote City would have to drop points at home against Bulleen.
With every game kicking off concurrently at 3pm, spectators across the state will be glued to their phones to check in on all the results in what is set to be a thrilling final day.
The boys need all the support of the Green and Black community to get over the line. Entry at Hume City Stadium is free for a massive day of football, so wear your Green and Black and get behind them as we go for it all.
