Western United will now be the opening game of the 2020/2021 A-League season after a last-minute fixture change due to the evolving COVID-19 outbreak in Sydney.
“In consultation with the NSW government, a decision has been made to move the A-League and Westfield W-League games scheduled for Sunday 27 December back by three days whilst the modified COVID-19 restrictions are in place in Sydney over the Christmas period,” Football Australia said.
The A-League 2020/21 season will now open on Monday 28 December with Western United FC up against Adelaide United at GMHBA Stadium in Geelong.
Head of Leagues, Greg O’Rourke said:
“We have worked closely with the NSW government to ensure that the A-League and Westfield W-League seasons will go ahead as planned with the best possible experience for fans and players within the current restrictions. Moving the game back three days with a reduced capacity supports the government’s risk mitigation plan in relation to crowds and to mobility around the city during this Christmas period and New Year’s Eve.”
