Western United battle without reward in wintry Wellington

Western United was defeated 2-0 by Phoenix on a windy and rainy Friday night in Wellington to open Round 20 of the Hyundai A-League.

United survived a barrage from Phoenix inside the first 20 minutes with Green and Black keeper Filip Kurto in stellar form.

But the hosts found a way past the Polish keeper and took the one-goal lead at the break.

As the rain and wind buffeted the players in the second half, United battled manfully but could not find a way back into this eagerly contested encounter.

David Ball’s goal in the 90th minute confirming the points for the home side.
