Western Weekly Wrap

Western United Academy

Welcome to the WWW, we go around the grounds to get you everything you need to know on the latest match results, from all the Green and Black teams across A-Leagues, NPL and Futsal. Go United!

It was an epic weekend of football for our Club, with our final trip to Tasmania for the A-Leagues Tasmania Tour, kick-off of the JBNPL season, an intra-club showdown between our NPL U21s and U23s and loads of frantic futsal action. In total, ten teams represented our Club over the weekend, with one further team having play suspended due to weather conditions.

Our A-Leagues teams put on a great show for the locals in Hobart with a double-header at North Hobart Oval to close out this year’s Tasmania Tour.  The girls continued with their winning form to defeat Central Coast Mariners and the boys came oh so close to stealing the three points from Sydney FC, but in the end had to settle for a solitary point in what was a courageous show of effort by the team.

NPL Seniors Friendly

The Senior Academy teams took the opportunity to finetune preparations ahead of their opening game against Kingston City this coming weekend with an intra-club game after a strong run of competitive pre-season fixtures. With a number of Academy players involved with the first team it offers even more opportunity for young Academy talents to impress before round one.

Western United played away to Avondale in the opening round of the JBNPL season.

Western United 5-0 Avondale

Goal scorers: Devetak, Popovski, Karaiskos, Demissie, Macfarlane

And just like that, pre-season was over and it was time for the U14s to kick off the junior academy season against Avondale FC. The heat forecast for the day didn’t dampen the enthusiasm for both teams as they held each other out to keep the score goalless at the half. The second half however was a different story as the boys found another gear, sharing the goals among five different scorers to sweep away their opponents, setting the path to a solid start to the season.

Western United 2-0 Avondale

Goal scorers: Own Goal, Vonja

In our season opener against a challenging opponent, we took an early lead with an own goal. Despite missed opportunities, Jordy Vonja’s late penalty sealed the victory, showcasing the team’s togetherness and effort in warm conditions. The performance sets a promising tone for the upcoming qualifying rounds.

Western United 2-1 Avondale

Goal scorers: Leban, Di Lorenzo

It was a positive performance from the group on Sunday against Avondale. We threatened early on and looked dangerous in attack which led to two goals from Karl Leban and Matthew Di Lorenzo. A lapse in concentration allowed Avondale back into the game with a goal but the boys showed great character to see out the remainder 2-1.

Another dominating week of Green and Black futsal with wins from our women’s and men’s teams and a loss to our youth team, although they remain on top of the table in their league. Both the Women’s and Men’s teams remain fourth on the table. Young signing Elias Parthimos won an impressive second consecutive Player of the Match award in the Men’s and will be one to watch on his futsal journey.
