Western United is immensely proud to confirm Christian Dermentzoglou has been called up to a domestic training camp with the Subway Joeys.

The Under-17 national team will come together from 16 April to 21 April at the Sydney Academy of Sport and Recreation for an intensive camp.

The squad is continuing its preparations for the AFC U17 Asian Cup which is set to be hosted by Thailand in June this year.

Performances at that tournament will then dictate whether the Joeys qualify for the FIFA U17 World Cup in November, with the four semi-finalists at the Asian Cup earning a ticket.

Dermentzoglou’s selection is a notable one for United, being the first time that one of the Club’s original crop of Junior Academy players has been recognised for a national team camp.

Western United Academy Director Anthony Frost said he was proud of Dermentzoglou’s call-up and the early success of United’s Junior Academy pathway.

“Christian has impressed immediately since joining us and we are delighted to see him be rewarded with selection into the Joeys camp,” he said.

“Christian has not only proven his quality amongst his own age group, but he has also displayed his work ethic and mentality by playing and training with older players at Western United.

“We are extremely proud of Christian’s development since joining our Academy and we are looking forward to hopefully seeing more players included in national team camps in the future.”

Dermentzoglou joined the Western United Academy initially as a member of the Under 16’s squad but has quickly risen up the ranks.

After scoring four goals in five matches, Dermentzoglou has bene regularly promoted into the Under 18’s squad where he has continued his sensational form, bagging seven goals in six appearances in that competition.

Dermentzoglou has taken the next step in his development at Western United having been called into training with the Under 21’s in recent weeks.

The young gun will now look to continue the hard work and impress throughout the camp in order to earn further recognition in the future.
