Josh Risdon looking to keep building after joining 50-game club

Josh Risdon has started the 2022/23 Isuzu UTE A-League Men season in fine form for Western United, picking up the man of the match award in the side’s 1-1 draw with Macarthur FC last Friday night.

The vice-captain led United with 90 touches and five key passes, won 10 duels and provided an assist for Lachie Wales’ equaliser in a typical all-encompassing display from right-back.

Risdon said he is feeling at the top of his game and is confident that the team performances are getting better.

“I’m feeling good, feeling fit – probably the fittest I’ve been. Our performances have been very good, maybe the points aren’t there but there’s a lot to build on in our performances,” he said.

“Personally I’m feeling good, I’m linking up well with Walesy, we’re getting some good combinations on the side there. I’m enjoying it and let’s hope we can keep it going.”

The night marked Risdon’s 50th A-League Men appearance for the Green and Black, the 30-year-old becoming just the eighth player to reach the milestone for the Club.

While injuries stopped that total from being reached sooner in his stint at the Club, Risdon said it was a special moment for him being a foundation player in the West.

“It feels great, it took me a few seasons to get there with a few injuries but it’s a good milestone for myself. I’ve been here from the start, I’ve really enjoyed my time here and 50 games at the Club is quite special,” he said.

Risdon added he would never have thought that he would be an A-League Men Champion and the Club vice-captain on his 50th appearance.

“I didn’t expect either. I never really envisioned myself as being a captain, but the boss gave me a chance and I’m really enjoying the role,” he said.

“We’ve always wanted to win something, probably even ourselves didn’t expect it to come in the third year. Being a Champion is quite special as well.

“We’re getting called the Champions this year and obviously not off to the greatest start, but we’ll bounce back I’m sure.”

Risdon and his teammates will hit the road this weekend for the first interstate trip of the season, taking on Central Coast Mariners on Saturday October 29.
