Football fans in the West can cheer on the Matildas and meet a pair of Western United stars on Thursday night at Footscray’s Maddern Square.
The Maribyrnong City Council is putting on an event for fans to cheer on the girls in Green and Gold as they take on Nigeria in their second match of Group B at the FIFA Women’s World Cup, kicking off at 8pm.
With a big screen coming into the square and free hot chocolates to keep hands and hearts warm throughout the night, it is sure to be a wonderful evening of football celebration.
On top of that, Western United Isuzu UTE A-League Men stars Ramy Najjarine and Kane Vidmar will be in attendance to meet fans and enjoy watching the match with the community.
The players will be on hand to sign autographs, take pictures with fans and hand out stickers and other giveaways.
Fans will also be able to hear from the players in a half-time Q&A, keeping up the football spirit throughout an exciting evening.
The Matildas match will be taking place in Brisbane and will be an important one for Tony Gustavsson’s side as it looks to secure qualification for the knockout stages.
A win over Nigeria would all but confirm a top two place in Group B and lead the Matildas into a crucial encounter against Canada to end the group stage, with a result there ensuring the co-hosts give themselves the best possible route in the knockout stages by finishing first in the group.
Everyone in the area is encouraged to come down and join in the fun at Maddern Square, celebrating this landmark FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
Get there early to meet the players before kick-off and get ready for a big night of football in Footscray.
