Western United has secured a major signing for its Isuzu UTE A-League Men side with midfielder Angus Thurgate joining on a three-year deal.

The talented young midfielder arrives from Newcastle Jets where he has spent the last six seasons, debuting as a 17-year-old in 2018.

Thurgate’s talent has seen him win the Isuzu UTE A-League Young Footballer of the Year award while his development also earned him an Olyroos call-up in 2021.

Thurgate, 23, is eager to embark on the next challenge in his football career and said he can’t wait to get started in the Green and Black.

“I’m buzzing to start a new challenged with Western United, I’m really looking forward to creating some history for this club and getting to work,” he said.

“Speaking with John (Aloisi) and Mal (Impiombato) and listening to the vision and plans for the coming seasons really enticed me to want to join and add some more success to this club.

“I’m really excited to get down to Melbourne and get to work with the lads.”

Western United Head Coach John Aloisi spoke of his delight at securing the signature of one of the Isuzu UTE A-League’s biggest young talents.

“We are extremely pleased to be able to bring a player of Angus’ calibre to our squad and to our Club,” he said.

“Angus has been a regular first-team player from a young age and he will add significant quality into our midfield with his physicality, intelligence and his ability on the ball.

“As well as his talent, Angus has a fantastic character and will fit seamlessly into the culture of our Club. I’m looking forward to seeing him join up with the squad as we strive to meet our goals next season.”

Despite being only 23 years of age, Thurgate has already made 116 appearances and scored 11 goals in the Isuzu UTE A-League.

An extremely versatile player, Thurgate has spent time playing in both defensive and attacking midfield roles while also playing up front and in wide areas for the Jets in previous years.

His all-roundedness makes him a threat in any area of the pitch with strength in the tackle, ball-playing ability and an adeptness at arriving late in the box to get into goal-scoring positions.

Thurgate becomes Western United’s first new signing for the 2023/24 Isuzu UTE A-League season and will be ready to join the squad for the beginning of pre-season.
