On the back of his purple patch in the 2021/22 season, Western United’s Steven Lustica has inked a one-year contract extension at the Club.
The 30-year-old is enjoying a shining role in United’s midfield with three goals already to his name, including a crucial winner against Melbourne City last month.
Lustica said he was delighted to be able to extend his stay at the Club and to continue to be part of the journey in the West.
“I’m very excited to extend my contract. I’ve enjoyed my time here since day one, I feel very settled in Melbourne with my fiancé, Marina,” he said.
“The Club is going in a very exciting direction and I’m looking forward to being a part of it.”
Lustica remains the only Western United outfield player to start every single A-League Men game this season, owing to his consistently quality performances in the centre of the pitch.
Aloisi praised the work that Lustica has put in to play an important role this season and is pleased to have him on board for next season as well.
“Since I came in, Steven has been outstanding to work with. He had a really positive pre-season and has been a real difference maker for us on the pitch,” he said.
“As well as his ability I also love his leadership and what he means to the group, so I’m really happy that he’s agreed to stay on for at least another year.
“He’s got so much experience already but I also think there is a lot more still to come from him. He’s working very hard, always wants to improve and is helping the younger players in the squad as well. I’m really excited to see how he can continue helping us into the future.”
After joining midway through the Club’s inaugural season, Lustica is enjoying football and highlighted John Aloisi’s impact on both himself and the group.
“He’s been fantastic, he’s brought in structures and respect among the group. We’re working well, and that’s reflected in our results so far this season, so we’re looking forward to building on this,” he said.
“We’ve got a fantastic coach in John, we’re working very hard on the field and the end goal is we want to have success. I want to be winning trophies with this club, that’s what drives me forwards.”
This marks a perfect week for Lustica, who will make his 150th A-League Men appearance if he is selected to play against Western Sydney Wanderers this week.
